Royal Albert Hall History
Situated in the heart of the city, the Royal Albert Hall has been host to some of the most legendary performances and events in the world.
The venue was the brainchild of Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria, who had a vision of creating a “Hall of Arts and Sciences” to celebrate the achievements of the British people. The project was approved in 1867, and construction on the hall began the following year. The building was designed by Captain Francis Fowke, a military engineer who had also been involved in the construction of the Victoria and Albert Museum. The hall was completed in 1871, and was opened by Queen Victoria herself.
Since its opening, the Royal Albert Hall has hosted a wide variety of performances, from classical music to rock concerts. Some of the most famous performers to play at the hall include The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Adele. It is also home to the BBC Proms, an annual summer season of classical music.
The hall has also been used for a variety of other events, from political rallies to royal occasions. In 1948 it hosted the Olympic Games’ closing ceremony, and in 2002 it was the site of Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee celebration.
