About Lyceum Theatre

In one form or another, the Lyceum Theatre has been part of London’s historic West End theatre district since it was first built in 1765. In the centuries to come, it would be rebuilt a half dozen times and burned down twice, serving as The English Opera House and the Lyceum Ballroom before returning to its original title and purpose in 1996. It was also almost demolished twice to make room for other construction projects.

Through all that upheaval, the architecture of the facade and portico with its memorable white columns remained. The rest was ornamented in rococo style during the rebuild of 1904. Inside, the theatre has a proscenium stage and raked (sloped) flooring. It seats 2,165 audience members on three levels, including stalls on the ground floor and balconies on either side.

Beyond its long-time physical place in Covent Garden, the Lyceum holds a special place in Britain’s cultural memory as well. Madame Tussaud’s first waxworks was held there, and it’s where Bram Stoker wrote “Dracula,” while working alongside famed Victorian actor Henry J. Irving. Irving’s story is also intriguing, as he managed the theatre for over two decades while playing to sold-out crowds himself.

Lyceum Theatre Bag Policy

Like most historic sites in London, the Lyceum Theatre works hard to ensure security for all its guests. Like elsewhere in London, security has gotten tighter for Lyceum Theatre. So, the entry process can be somewhat time-consuming, with long lines and bag checks, and there have been some changes in the rules.

There is a cloakroom if you have a heavy coat you need to check. However, while patrons could check suitcases in the past, Lyceum Theatre bag policy dictates that visitors may no longer bring their luggage, rucksacks/backpacks, or large bags of any kind inside.

Some pushchairs/prams and strollers can be claim-checked at the cloakroom, but only if they fold down, and space is limited, so be sure to arrive early. The main entrance is not wheelchair accessible, but there is an accessible entrance to the left of the main doors. However, there are only six wheelchair spaces inside, and any special arrangements will need to be made in advance.

The cloakroom opens one hour before showtime and costs £1 per item. Additionally, the Theatre cannot be held liable for lost or stolen items.
