About Safeco Field

This one-of-a-kind retractable-roof baseball stadium opened in 1999 as the home of the Seattle Mariners baseball team, when it was christened Safeco Field as part of a 20-year naming rights deal. It’s been called that ever since, even though T-Mobile bought its naming rights in 2018 and the name was officially changed to T-Mobile Park on January 1, 2019. Passionate fans are even known to Tweet replies correcting the team’s public relations account (@MarinersPR) account for using the new name.

Safeco Field has been the site of several playoff games as well as historic home-runs and no-hitters. The Mariners made MLB history in 2012 with three no-hitter perfect games at the same ballpark in one season, and tied the record for a combined no-hitter during the second of those matches. Other notable events include the 2001 Seattle Bowl, WrestleMania XIX in 2003, and hometown reunions of Pearl Jam and the surviving members of Nirvana (on separate occasions) in 2018.

The building itself is one of two iconic ballparks in downtown Seattle, with a classic brick facade reminiscent of the early 20th century. Its halls are filled with modern art installments, and the complex also houses the Baseball Museum of the Pacific Northwest and the Mariners Hall of Fame.

Safeco Field Bag Policy

The Mariners announced in a 2018 press release that they would be implementing “stricter enforcement of existing Major League Baseball security regulations on bag size,” which prohibit any bags with dimensions larger than 16″ x 16″ x 8″ from entering the premises.

Although strollers and wheelchairs can be stored with guest services, the ballpark does not check or store luggage, coats, or personal items, purses or backpacks included. The stadium has a no-liability policy if your things are lost or stolen (though anything returned to Lost & Found will be kept for one month before being discarded).

Additionally, certain items that were once treated more leniently, including pocket knives, can no longer be checked at guest services, but must be returned to your vehicle (for those brave enough to drive), surrendered to security, or stored with the paid locker service available on game days.

All other weapons are prohibited, along with large or professional camera equipment, hard-sided coolers, selfie sticks, skateboards, rollerblades, and hoverboards. All bags are searched by security personnel at the gates. Guests are also asked to remove phones and car keys as they walk through a standing metal detector; any alerts will be followed with a wand-check or light pat-down.
