About Petco Park

Although it is primarily known as the home of the San Diego Padres, Petco Park is a versatile venue used frequently for other events. First opened in 2004, the stadium is named after the San Diego-based pet retailer Petco (which paid for the rights until 2026). Petco Park is famous for having amazing views of San Diego, with an innovative architecture that makes it look like it was woven in the cityscape. It also offers the “best sight lines in baseball,” according to the MLB official website.

The architectural firm that designed the stadium so that the concourses are facing both a field and the city, which is a first in MLB. Also, contrary to most other outdoor ballparks, the batter faces the north. Therefore, the patrons in the grandstands enjoy an uninterrupted view of the San Diego bay and the surrounding attractions.

Petco Park Bag Policy

According to the official guidelines issued by MLB, all bags and backpacks are subject to inspection prior to entering Petco Park. All soft-sided containers larger than 16x16x8 inches will be not permitted on the premises. The same deal goes for hard-sided coolers, bags, and backpacks with metal frames. In other words, if you want to enter Petco Park and you happen to carry anything as big as a laptop bag with you, you’re going to have a bad time.

Besides backpacks and coolers, here is a list of other items that are not allowed in Petco Park

  • Hard-sided coolers
  • Glass bottles
  • Cans
  • Outside beverages and drinks
  • Alcohol / Drugs / Chewing tobacco / Medical Marijuana
  • Bats, large brooms, wooden sticks or rods
  • Banners or signs larger than 4 feet x 8 feet (or anything obscene, commercial, or political)
  • Beach Balls, frisbees – anything that can be thrown (no unsliced fruit). Exception: autographed baseballs
  • Balloons unless preapproved for an event
  • Chairs with a rigid frame
  • Drones
  • E-cigs
  • Laser pointers
  • Luggage
  • Musical instruments / noisemakers / fireworks
    Masks
  • Motorcycle helmets (must be checked at gate)
  • Knives or weapons of any sort
  • Skateboards, scooters, etc.
  • Umbrellas

All bags will be searched by security and Petco Park reserves the right to deny you entrance if you violate any of the above rules.
